Have you ever tried to follow a story where the main villain has multiple identities? It’s frustrating and confusing.

That’s the current reality in cybersecurity. A single hacking group can appear under completely different names depending on who is reporting it. Microsoft, Google, CrowdStrike, and other security firms often assign separate labels to the same group.

This inconsistency doesn’t just create confusion. It slows down how quickly experts and businesses can respond to attacks.

To address this, Microsoft is joining forces with CrowdStrike to create a standardized naming system for hacking groups. The idea is simple: every cybercriminal organization gets one agreed-upon name. This isn’t just about organization; it’s about improving response times, understanding threat behavior, and enhancing overall security.

At present, a hacking group targeting companies could be called Salt Typhoon by Microsoft, GhostEmperor by another security firm, and OPERATOR PANDA by yet another. Without realizing these names refer to the same group, businesses may miss critical warning signs.

The new system will categorize these groups based on origin and type, using weather-inspired names. Chinese state-backed actors will receive “Typhoon” labels, Russian groups “Blizzard,” and other threat actors like ransomware gangs or spyware developers will be identified with names such as “Storm,” “Tempest,” or “Tsunami.”

This approach might seem simple, but it has a major impact. Clear, consistent identification allows IT teams and cybersecurity providers to spot patterns faster, act decisively, and reduce the risk of overlooked threats.

It also levels the playing field. Small and medium-sized businesses benefit because they don’t need to be cybersecurity experts to understand the threat landscape. When everyone is using the same language, responding to attacks becomes far more efficient.

Although these changes happen behind the scenes, they are vital in making cybersecurity more organized and effective. Standardized naming could be one of the quiet but powerful ways your business stays safer in an increasingly complex digital world.
